Prostatitis Treatment at Northwest Urology

Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland that can cause pain, urinary issues, and sometimes fever. This condition can be acute or chronic and is often linked to bacterial infections, urinary tract infections (UTIs), or other underlying causes. At Northwest Urology, we provide comprehensive care for prostatitis, using advanced diagnostic techniques and personalized treatment plans to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life.

The treatment for prostatitis depends on the underlying cause, severity of symptoms, and whether the condition is acute or chronic.

The primary treatment options for Prostatitis include:

Symptoms of prostatitis can vary but often include:

  • Pain in the groin, pelvic area, or genitals
  • Frequent or painful urination
  • A burning or stinging sensation during urination
  • Fever and chills (in acute cases)
  • Lower back pain
  • Sexual dysfunction, such as painful ejaculation

Prostatitis may develop from a variety of factors that lead to prostate inflammation. Common causes include:

  • Bacterial Infections: Both acute and chronic bacterial infections can cause prostatitis.
  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Infections in the urinary tract can spread to the prostate.
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs may trigger prostate inflammation.
  • Prostate Stones: Mineral deposits in the prostate can lead to irritation or infection.
  • Pelvic Injury: Trauma to the pelvic area can result in prostatitis.

Certain factors increase the likelihood of developing prostatitis, such as:

  • Frequent UTIs or recent bladder infections
  • A history of prostatitis
  • Abnormalities in the urinary tract
  • Being older than 50

Antibiotics

For bacterial prostatitis, antibiotics are the primary treatment to eliminate the infection.

Pain Management

Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil), help reduce pain and discomfort.

Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

Physical therapy can stretch or strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and reduce chronic pain associated with prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain syndrome.

Medications and Supplements

  • Alpha-blockers: These medications help to relax the smooth muscle of the bladder neck and prostate to improve urinary symptoms associated with prostatitis.
  • Quercetin or Cernilton Supplements: These natural therapies may help alleviate inflammation and symptoms.
  • Medications for Sexual Function: Certain medications may improve sexual health impacted by prostatitis.
  • Antidepressants: May be used to manage long-term pain in chronic cases.

Although prostatitis cannot always be prevented, certain lifestyle changes can reduce the risk:

  • Limiting caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods
  • Staying hydrated to prevent dehydration and support urinary health
  • Avoiding activities that may irritate the prostate, such as prolonged sitting on hard surfaces
