Kidney Cancer

Kidney Cancer Treatment at Northwest Urology

Kidney Cancer begins when cells in the kidneys grow uncontrollably, forming tumors, most commonly renal cell carcinoma (RCC). When detected early, kidney cancer can often be effectively managed. At Northwest Urology, we provide comprehensive care for kidney cancer using advanced diagnostic tools and personalized treatment options tailored to each patient’s situation. Understanding the stage of kidney cancer is crucial in developing an effective treatment plan, as survival rates vary significantly based on the stage at diagnosis.

Imaging studies are the main way of diagnosing kidney cancers, typically computed tomography (CT), MRI, or Ultrasonography. For kidney cancers in the lining of the urinary tract (renal pelvis, ureter), a ureteroscope is used to inspect the lining of the kidneys and ureters and to perform a biopsy of any tumors. In addition, the cells of the urine may be inspected for abnormality.

Surgery is generally the primary treatment for kidney cancer that has not escaped the kidney (ie non-metastatic kidney cancer). In some cases there is a role for surgery even when it has. Treatment options may include:

In the early stages, kidney cancer often presents no symptoms. As the tumor grows, symptoms may include blood in the urine, a palpable flank mass, pain in the lower back or side, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, fever, and fatigue.

The exact causes of kidney cancer are not fully understood. However, several factors increase the risk, including lifestyle factors like smoking and obesity, exposure to harmful chemicals, and genetic predisposition.

Key risk factors include smoking, obesity, family history of kidney cancer, and exposure to specific chemicals such as arsenic and cadmium.

Active Surveillance

Because kidney cancer often progresses slowly when the tumor is small (less than 3 cm), for some patients the best treatment may be to simply monitor the cancer. This does not mean ignoring the condition, but rather developing and implementing a plan of measuring the progression of disease over time. Schedules for imaging, examination, and testing are established so that patients with cancers growing more quickly or causing symptoms can be treated effectively without losing the opportunity for cure.

Partial Nephrectomy (kidney-sparing surgery)

Preserving the normal part of the kidney has been shown to decrease the onset of chronic kidney disease and future cardiovascular disease. Therefore, the urologists at Northwest Urology perform partial nephrectomy whenever possible. The malignant tumor is removed either through open or robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery. Patients with only one functioning kidney, chronic kidney disease, or small tumors should have kidney-sparing surgery, if possible.

Nephrectomy

When removal of the entire kidney is necessary, Northwest Urology urologists often utilize minimally invasive surgical techniques to speed the patient’s recovery time and decrease post-operative discomfort. Laparoscopic surgery, robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery, and hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery are options available to many patients.

Ablation

Ablative therapies, such as cryoablation or radiofrequency ablation, are considered for select small tumors as an alternate treatment option for partial nephrectomy or in patients who may not tolerate major surgery.
